One person is dead following a police standoff that prompted police to order residents to shelter in place in their basements and delayed a school opening Thursday morning.
The situation unfolded at 5:33 a.m. When officers from the Union County prosecutor's Office and Lyndhurst Police Department attempted to arrest an individual in front of a home on lake Avenue.
"During the execution of that arrest warrant, the subject in question fled and barricaded himself inside of the residence," said Jeff Angermeyer, chief of detectives for the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.
The Bergen County Regional SWAT Team was notified and positioned officers around the home.
"As members of the SWAT Team attempted to negotiate from outside of the residence, the subject, who was alone in the house, fired a gun and sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound," Angermeyer said.
When officers entered the home, they located the suspect inside. The suspect was pronounced dead, but identification is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, Angermeyer said.
No additional details were made available. During the shelter-in-place, police announced that Columbus Elementary School, which is located near the scene, would have a delayed opening. The school has since opened.
The shelter in place was lifted around 8 a.m.
