Bodega cats are once again at the center of New York City politics.

A measure tied to the "Bodega Cat Bill" would remove the city's prohibition on cats in retail food stores.

The council's bill also calls for voluntary programs for free vaccinations and spay and neuter services.

Supporters say the legislation reflects reality in neighborhoods across the city, where shop cats are already part of daily life and small business culture.

However, the council's own bill summary says city action alone would not fully clear the way.
