A man was killed in a chain-reaction crash overnight on the Cross Bronx Expressway, authorities said.

The crash occurred on the southbound side near Jerome Avenue in Tremont, prompting a partial shutdown for several hours as police investigated. The roadway has since reopened in time for the morning commute.

Police said a 30-year-old man died following the crash, which involved a tractor-trailer and two passenger vehicles.

According to investigators, the chain reaction began when a man driving a Kia SUV stopped in the left lane for unknown reasons. The tractor-trailer then struck the SUV. Moments later, the tractor-trailer was rear-ended by a Toyota Corolla driven by the man who later died.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured. The driver of the Kia SUV and a passenger in that vehicle were taken to a hospital and are in stable condition, police said.

Authorities have not released the identity of the man who died.
